Introduction to the Calamitous News Chronic barking is often more than just a problem for the neighbors whose lives are disrupted by it. A vocal canine can also be a symptom of dire problems looming in the background, as well as a predictor of worse things to come. For example, belligerent barking goes hand and glove with vicious canine behavior, because they are part of the same response cluster. That is why, when a canine severely mauls a human being, the attack will almost always have been preceded by days, weeks, or months of menacing vocal behavior on the part of the dog. Therefore, by assessing a dog's belligerence quotient at the time of the first barking complaint, the authorities can identify and deal with vicious dogs, preemptively, before they actualize their vocal threats by mauling someone. Very often, chronic barking is also a reflection of an unfit owner who is providing inadequate care for his dog. That is why, when the authorities get wind of a barking problem, they should go out to the residence to assess the kind of care the dog is receiving, evaluate his level of ferocity, and gauge the owner's commitment to properly socialize the animal. In the Calamitous News you will find media accounts of disasters that could have been prevented, if the authorities had made a comprehensive response to reports of chronic barking, instead of shortchanging the problem, which should have been a red flag for the trouble that was dead ahead. In addition, you will find stories of dog owners who were victimized by criminals or who suffered some other misfortune that could have been averted, because they failed to properly bark train their dogs. Or, because they failed to investigate and make a proper response to the vocalizations of their canines.
